A blockchain, in Spanish: cadena de bloques, is a list of records that grows contiguously, in blocks, which are connected securely by means of cryptographic algorithms. Each block typically contains a pointer to a previous block, a date/time, and transaction data. By design, blockchains are inherently resistant to data modification. It is an open and distributed chain that allows transactions between two parties to be recorded efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way.
The blocks contain sets of valid transactions that have been hashed and encoded within a Merkle tree. Each block includes the hash of the previous block in the blockchain, relating the two. The linked blocks form a chain. This successive process confirms the integrity of the previous block, allowing the chain to be audited back to the original block.
